Hi, I saw you guys at the Sky River Rock Festival in the Seattle Area and was blown away. Shortly after that I picked up your little Ep at a head shop. I even contemplated buying 2, including 1 to keep as a collectible. If only. I was jealous of a buddy of mine in the SF bay area who was able to see you and other great bands on a regular basis back in the day. I also recall seeing Bobby W with the Steve Miller Band at the University of Washington and the set opening with B.W. singing lead before Miller joined the band on stage. I loved that opening song ("Good Morning," right?). Hope FB will play live in the not too distant future. Thanks for the great music.
16 May 2008 - SF Bay Area

Bobby's Comments:   Hi back at ya Dean!

This is Bobby Winkelman writting back to you just to say thanks for all your support for my, performance of "Good Morning", a song I wrote that Steve featured on his "Number 5", album in 1970 on Capitol Records. I invited my good friends the Frumious Bandersnatch to be become his new band after that album.
Before that, Steve played guitar, Tim Davis was on drums, and I played bass and we appeared as a power trio with a giant wall of amplifiers sometimes still called with The Steve Miller Blues Steve Miller Band.
Later, Tim decided to leave the band to pursue his solo career.
It was then Iswithced to guitar to bring my friend Ross Valory take over my former bass duties, Jack King to play drums, and David Denny to join in on guitar.

He's the one that mentored my bass playing in the first place, and continues as one of the founding member's of Journey today.

I am only 13 years old but I really enjoy the music of the 60's.I recently picked up one of your LP's at a garage sale and it was amazing. Thank You for your amazing music.
1 May 2008 - Solana Beach, CA

Bobby's Comments:   Hi there Sander:

Thanks for writing. If that record is indeed one of our original purple see purple ones, there were only 1000 made ever, and they are currently fetching up to $1,500. 00 each on E BAY because of that. If it is not a see through one , it's a pirated copy but the sound is exactly the same.

Anyhow, rock on Dude!

We love you!

Peace!

Bobby

Thanks for sharing those memories,Bobby.I too visited Gary when he had the goats, and remember the limp that resulted from that accident. Did you make it to his wedding in the redwood grove? Gary was always my role model for the coolest dude award. I also remember Egl from those days, always following his astrophysics bliss.and the Menges were friends as well. Thanks again for the memories, and for your musical contribution over the years!
23 April 2008 - New York City

Bobby's Comments:   Hi Michael:

Having lost touch with all those good friends from the past I was unaware Gary had tied the knot but I remember the Menges girl as being very nice and the two of them being an item way back when.

I do remeber Egle too. What a tripped out or cosmically tuned in dude depending on how you might care to look at it.

Please write any time.

Bobby

Wow what a time capsule! Not only remember your concert at Campolindo, you mention people I haven't seen in nearly 40 years.I too wonder what became of Gary Boudreaux (no matter how it's spelled).Even your psychedelic fonts bring back memories.
21 April 2008 - New York City

Bobby's Comments:   Hi Michael:

Thanks very much for writing. I loved those shows and times too!

Gary was in fact my closest and best friend back then. We spent many days and nights with us both playing guitars and me singing at his cabin and in the woods with his two goats there in Canyon California. He once told me he worked as a painter on houses to earn money when he had to. I felt so bad when he got hit by a car as he was walking along the road in Canyon one day. Later, when I joined the Steve Miller Band in 1970 as a singer, bassist, guitarist, I moved to a house of my own on two acres right above painter Johnathan Bachelor's up in the trees on the hillside in the canyon.

Cheers;

Bobby

Hey, I saw you in South Lake Tahoe on the same bill with The Chambers Brothers. I think the club was called The Sanctuary. I was probably 12. Weird. Remember? Was that 1967? 8? 9?
7 February 2008 - San Jose, CA

Bobby's Comments:   Wow! Do I! They were great!

That was a wonderful venue for us.

The Chambers brothers were incredible with their song "Time", their harmonies, and insanely good English drummer.

We went and saw Elvis perform live after the show. Need I say more?

Bobby - A while back you guys had some live tracks on the mp3 dot com website. I had always meant to grab them but never did, and that site is long gone. Any chance you could post the files to this site or, better yet, release them as a live CD? Looking forward to the new CD!

I thought you guys were just a rumor until we received SF Nuggets from Rhino. The switchboard lit up when I play "Hearts TO Cry". Calls included a guy who remembered seeing the band at the Fillmore. Glad to hear you're still around.

Hey again Bob! Do you ever hear from or know what became of Mike Green a/o Buzz Thompsen? When do you plan to be back in the creek? How are your father mother and Carole? Is your old house gone? Mickey

Bobby's Comments:   Hi Mikey:

I lost touch with Mike Greene and don't remember Buzz Thompson.

The old family house was sold and moved.

Oh yes. We have just released our new Frumious Bandersnatch Rhino 4 CD set with 120 fully pictured paged book titled Love Is The Song We Sing and are feature throughout the book but additionally on page 97.

This package will soon be come known world wide as the definitive statement of the San Francisco and Bay area bands from 1965 through 1970.

My buddy from London Alec Palao produced the project, and Prarrie Prince another aquaintance did the cover and a lot of the other art work.

This is truely the best of the best.

In addition to that project we're finally putting the finishing touches on soon to be released fall 2007 The Flight Of The Frumious Bandersnatch CD.

This will feature 12 brand new original songs by the band and so far all those that have critiqued the ruff mixes have been blown away.

God where do I begin, First off It is great to find this site. I've been looking for your EP for years, and I'll buy the CD soon. I am from Lafayette and I use to hang out with the "Beggars Opera" when they lived above the real estate office on Mt. Diablo Blvd, and was a frequent visitor to "The Lafayette Teen Center" Contra Costa County's version of the "Fillmore". I do remember a "Soft Ball" game played between the two bands (Beggars and FB) and the Keg at 2nd base,I was the home plate ump and do vividly remember Herbie (your road mgr.) being pretty upset when I called him out on strike three. But my fondest recollection was seeing them at Campolindo High School second bill to the Dead in the spring of 68 or was it 69, FB blew the Dead right off the stage. I was just a lad of 16 at the time. I was a roadie for a band called "Keiv" that did a cover versions of Chesire Cat."and you know with a feeling like that take a tip from the Chesire Cat" I LOVE that song and have been looking for a copy for that for 40 years!!!! This is like find the "Pot-o- Gold" at the end of the rainbow!!!!! thanks for some of my fondest memories.Juliann

Bobby's Comments:   Ah yes Scott and all those fond memories came streaming back to me by reading your excellent e-mail.

Thanks for being there because we did and do it to make you happy.

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" I am often writing reviews and lists. I had to include Frumious Bandersnatch in the list of best rock and roll band names from the 1960's. More importantly this site should be noted in how well put together it is. A great band deserves a great website. Thank you from Craig Fenton Jefferson Airplane Land, USA

I saw Debi Ruddock email 2005. She's my cousin, I'm Jim Fassio's sister, I saw Dave, Jack and Brian 2 years ago when the All Night Flight played in Concord. Private party. It's great to see how Dave, Jack, Brian, and Ross have kept up with their music careers. I see Dave is doing remakes for Steve Miller. Can't wait for that CD to come out. I remember back in the 60's when the band would practice in our garage in Lafayette. I have great pictures of those times. I also remember the house on Golden Gate Way in Lafayette Rudy's Inferno. Wow old times.
6 April 2007 - Murphys

Bobby's Comments:   I remember you very well Marie.

Please e-mail any good pictures you might have of the band to wink19@verizon.net as we are currently assemling a new book.

So happy to come across your site - saw frumious numerous time when at PHHS in 67-68 - in 69 Dave D and others played at my wedding reception in 69 at Canyon, Herbie H. doing the honors of the requisite bottle of champagne on the bride's head! Any chance of a live reunion?
26 March 2007 - Mill Valley, CA

Bobby's Comments:   I just finally got to the e-mails today 3/27/07 Terry and there you were!

Yes the old days were certainly wondereful alright.

Jack, David and Brian Hough are playing gigs now as "The All Night Flight". They're really quite good and original and have still got it!

I saw the band twice at San Ramon High School in Danville, CA. Never forgot them. The first concert was in the boys' gym, the second in the girls' gym. Thinking back on it nearly 40 years, it seems the first show was more jam oriented while the second was more song oriented. Might have been a different lineup. It was around 1969 and the shows were several months apart.
24 March 2007 - San Diego

Bobby's Comments:   Hi Chuck:
Right you are!
Ross Valory was our Bass Player in 1968 and Jack Notestein took over in 1969.
Thanks for your email.

I hung around with the band in the '69 timeframe. I was a good friend of Bret Willmott's who played with the band for about a year I think. In fact I lost an amp that I had loaned to Brian when the warehouse was ripped off. It was cool times though.Jack King's great singing, George and Bret's playing and their song writing made this band fun. I remember seeing the band play out in Concord at a "festival". Ross was in a different band at the time. When George left the band, Bret and I renewed our musical relationship in a band Ross had been playing in. Stretches the brain to remember the particulars. I'll have to let Bret know to check out the site. Best of luck with the music, cool site. If you talk to Jack please tell him I said hi.
7 February 2007 - Mesa, Az

Bobby's Comments:   Thanks for your email and the loan of the amp you lost.

We lost all our band equiptment due to theft in later years too!

Good Luck!

bobby, really dig your site and thinking about having river graphics tweak mine. hit me back with a message on this board or email me. my email is on my site and address is my name with no breaks or dots and then dot com thanks.
30 November 2006 - upstate NY

Bobby's Comments:   Dear George:

I loved your site and Donna with River Graphics is absolutely the BEST!

I remember one of my show performances in particular with The Allman Brothers when I playing bass and singing with The Steve Miller band in a small town in Florida where our instruments were stolen a few hours before we were due on stage. We rushed down to the local guitar store and bought more instruments and then those that stole original instruments them offered to sell them back to us!

Well, the show went off without a hitch otherwise but isn't it hot and humid in the summer in Dixie!

Hi. My name is Rich Meyers and I'm Webmaster for George Tickner's Official website. I'm doing research on his time with Frumious Bandersnatch. Unfortunately, there's little or no information out there on his time with FB. I'd love to find out the years he spent with the band, if there are any recordings out there featuring George with FB and if there's anyway I can get a few pics of him with the band for George's site? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Rich Webmaster GeorgeTickner.com georgeticknerofficialwebsite@

Bobby's Comments:   I think I may have an old Matrix stereo qtr.track tape somewhere in my vast archives.with George on it. However, he was no longer playing in the band when I became a member.

As far as pictures, I suggest you try getting in touch with Jack King,
Brian Hough, David Denny, or Herbie Herbert.

I will need your email address to further respond.

Good Luck;

The Apse is still here , and the Grove Patrol awaits your reappearance…Old Gordy is gone and so Is old JB, but Egl’s still kickin’ and then there’s Maya…Don’t know their address now but I know Herbie and Bob from shop class with coach Reed ( Where were you in 62?) Barry Smith is still here and Dave Lynn (as Deva Rajan). We’d all be glad to see you if you could still see the Grove as a venue where you’d always be welcome. Maybe a few less band’s this time!! Don’t know what’s become of Lesley Loop (do you?) but Ramona Menge is handling all the bookings for the school and could help make it happen. Please extend my best to Tickner ( Grove Patrol with Biggins and Gordy and sometimes even Brenden) I was asking Jeeves about a copy of Jabberwocky ( for my Grand Kids!) and he turned me to your site. It’s great that you’re putting it back together. Will definitely get the CD. And would love it if you’d think of us as a venue where you’ll always be welcome
17 July 2006 - Canyon. where else?

Bobby's Comments:   Thanks so much for the invite. I think Maya might be with Herbie these days. Do you know of the whereabouts of Gary Boudreaux?

Fascinated to find this site while researching some historical info on Bonaroo (as a long-time fan of the Doobies, with whom you shared some members). The 1975 Warner Bros "package tour" is still remembered fondly here, although I was too young to go to any gigs!! I hope to acquire some Frumious music in pursuit of my own betterment. Best wishes from England, for the future - Jim

I was eleven years old in the "Summer of Love," 1967. My family was from Orinda, yet had moved to Texas in the Spring of '67. We returned in July to prepare to move a boat back from the Oakland Estuary to Austin. We stayed at the Fifth Avenue Marina aboard Cubuf with Marvin Cave, while Charlie Weber worked on our boat. My brothers, Kurt and Brian, and I spent the days at Gary Bennett's Squirkenworks and listened to the "Frumes" play at the warehouse. This is one of the most memorable times in my life. Who in the band would have been at the warehouse in the Summer of '67?

I first saw Frumious B. at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds Pavilion in 1969. They were one of several acts that night, but I only remember Frumious! Greatest Multi-Guitar band to this day.
Kathy Peck introduced me to David Denny at a restaurant classical guitar gig I was playing in SF in '92. After shaking his hand, Kathy said "Oh, David was in Frumious Bandersnatch." I was floored. To me, it was like meeting Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Steve Howe or someone like that. I'll never forget that gig!
Just ordered the purple LP, can't wait for shipment! Thanks!!!
